In order to improve my athletes performance I need to compare how they did, with how they are doing. It all comes down to distance and time. How fast can they run 10 miles, row a 5K, swim, bike, ski etc… The right tools are important, and they can’t be found at a health club or an outdoor boot camp.
Step 1 – Strength Training
If you want to improve your longevity in the sport, you must include weekly Olympic Strength Training. Barbell Deadlifts, Squats, and Lunges will keep your bones, joints, muscles, and connective tissue strong and durable for years to come.
Olympic lifting is also a good stimulus for developing power. Lifting lighter weights at max velocity will quickly translate into faster mile times.
Step 2 – Mileage
Whatever your sport, you need a computer to track your real time splits. A GPS watch is highly recommended. It’s the most accurate, and doesn’t require calibration. We recommend The Garmin Forerunner, it’s relatively inexpensive and very durable. Their web software is amazing. You can track speed, distance, pace, heart rate, and elevation. All important data, necessary to measure your improvement.
Step 3 – Pacing
I’ve found the best tools for teaching pacing to beginners is pairing the Concept2 Rower with our RowPro Software. It gives me real time data on my athlete’s distance, speed, pace, and heart rate. It graphs your split times so I can see if you paced evenly, or cycle through pushing too hard and falling off. Mastering pacing will make a world of difference on race day.
Step – 4 Race Day
Your official race time is the ultimate indicator. If you perform well on race day, that says you did things right. Make sure not to blow months of hard work. Rest up and listen to your body in the weeks leading up to your race. Scale back your training, especially if you feel worn down, or developed pain.

Welcome to Globo Gym
Most health clubs want two things: Pay on time and workout quietly. Don’t drop weights, don’t make noise, and for the love of god please don’t actually do any meaningful exercise. They’ve created an atmosphere that feels more like a museum of gym equipment instead of a place to push yourself. You have two options on the main floor: hit the treadmill or the Nautilus Equipment. Outside of the Aerobics room you’re going to get stared at or spoken to if your doing any kind of exercise that isn’t at a designated machine or station. Athletes don’t train this way because it doesn’t work.
Lunk Alarm
Let’s take a look at Planet Fitness. As a business man I think it’s genius, as a fitness professional it’s a failure. Walk in the door and the first thing you’ll notice is a giant warning light and siren. If you workout hard or loud enough to actually improve yourself you make the other members feel bad about themselves. They aren’t here to actually workout, they’re here to walk aimlessly on the treadmill and push some levers on a machine to simulate exercise.
Planet Fitness started out with a good idea. We want to create an atmosphere that’s welcoming to most people by excluding intimidating bodybuilders. I get it, but you went too far. You pushed away not just bodybuilders, but anyone looking to improve their fitness level.
Now You’re Hurting Your Members
The saddest thing about PF is they found a new angle to attract the fat and lazy “Pizza Mondays” and “Bagel Thursdays”. Here’s an actual quote off their Website “Pizza nights we go through 3000 pizzas. That’s 24000 slices per month!” This is like luring drug addicts into rehab with Heroin Mondays, yeah it’ll get them in there but it’s not helping.
Planet Fitness as big as you are and with all your resources you could be teaching your members proper nutrition. Why not hire a leading nutritionist to speak at your clubs, or partner with a nutrition website? As a health club you’re responsible for the health of your members, try to remember that.
Lets Do Things Right
Here at Solid Body the floor plan is open. There’s room to run, jump, throw, and do real exercise. I built it to give normal people access to a true Olympic Training Center. Our members range from everyday people who’ve never workout before to Elite Marathoners.
Fortunately coaches like myself are popping up around the country looking to change peoples lives and not just their bank accounts.
